Swenson Science Building
After making and characterizing our compounds, we require a good in vitro assay to get an idea of how effective our molecules are. With a collaboration with Dr. Johnson, we have access to the tools and room required to get these assays done. In this lab we can do both cellular and molecular studies of our compounds
-
Microwave
The popular technique is quickly becoming adopted in many reactions. The microwave in Swenson is a departmental one and gives us the chance to try out some of these reactions.
-
Incubators
Microbial and tissue cell lines are separated into their own incubators to remove contamination. Tissue cell lines are then separated into their own levels within the incubator. There are a total of 5 that we have access to.
-
Freezer
The freezer keeps our pure specimens for extended period of times, so when the time comes to test a sample we can do so within the week. Current species that we have and work with can be found in the projects page.
-
HEPA Hood
These portable hoods help to remove contamination and gives us the chance to work with some more pathogenic species.
-
Plate Reader
With the many compounds we make within the year we find ourselves doing many assays. Using plates is a good way to consolidate those assays. A plate reader is an excellent tool to evaluate the condition of each assay and gives us an idea of how effective our library is.
-
Autoclave
Biological waste is always in plenty supply, and Swenson offers a communal autoclave with which to dispose of it. It is also good for sterilization of different media.
-
Workspace
In place of chemicals and glassware, we now have media and plastic-ware.
