Authentic connection

Dallas Fix found fulfillment at UMD through authentic connections with classmates and community.

Dallas Fix graduated with a Bachelor of Accounting degree from the Labovitz School of Business and Economics. He earned his degree while engaging in an impressive array of extracurricular activities, including playing intramural basketball and volunteering on the practice squad for the Bulldogs’ women’s basketball team. Dallas served as vice president of the student Accounting Club and was an intern at RSM, a global accounting firm, where he will begin working as an auditor in the industrial sector later this year.

Originally from Mora, Minnesota, Fix worked in the family business of glass and auto-glass repair. He chose the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) for his studies because of fond memories from family trips when he was young, and because it was far enough away from home to provide independence, while still being close enough to family and connections in the area.

Fix spent his first year living off campus in Superior, but found a richer experience when he moved just 3 minutes from campus, and became involved with friends and organizations. “I've had a way better experience, and I've made way better connections with people.”

During his time at UMD, Fix “was surrounded by amazing people who helped me gain perspective,” he said. “People like Angie Braud, who taught me that networking isn't just a transaction; it's finding the kind of people you’re actually excited to grow alongside. Or Kristen Lesemann, who proved that how you treat people is way more important than any qualification on a piece of paper.”

His work as vice president of the Accounting Club at UMD and events the group held with RSM recruiters led to an internship in auditing. In a world of spreadsheets and numbers, Fix thrives on working with others. “ I definitely like the audit work, because you get to travel more and there's a lot more human interaction in it,” he said.

And he parlayed that internship directly into a job offer before graduation. “I got familiar with my team, made new friends, and got a return offer. That's the team I'll be working with … It’s pretty cool.”

After graduation, Fix hopes to finish earning his Certified Public Accountant (CPA) licensure before beginning his job with RSM in October.

At Fix’s commencement ceremony in May 2026, he reminded his classmates of the importance of relationships, about memories, and being present. “The degrees we receive today are a massive achievement,” he said. “They reflect years of discipline and sacrifice, and we should be incredibly proud to have earned them. But my challenge for us all is to remember that while the degree gets you in the door, it’s your character that keeps you in the room.”
