Why would the monks have been scared of free will? Christians belive in free will. It is a part of their attempt to get passed the philosophical problem of evil.
Problem of Evil = An omnipotent, omniscient, and omnibenevolent. . . yet evil exists? Christians try to get passed this by saying that humans are the cause of evil. Since God wants humans to have free choices, they are then able to make evil choices.
Plus, if the monks did not believe in free will, then they would not belive in Hell. A person cannot be punished for an action that is compulsery. We do not punish a person who has terets (sp) syndrome for swearing nor do we punish an insane person. The person has to have the abilty to choose, in order for us to punish him.
It is likely that the monks wanted to blaim the devil in order to escape the charge of hypocracy. They were not afraid of free will, they just wanted to believe that they were morally above murder. The needed the devil as a scape goat to preserve their morality.
