Q: What does William think is the best way of determining the truth or falsity of a hypothesis? How does this
compare to the inquisitor's methods for determining the truth?
A: In our groups discussion we thought that William believed science to be the best way of determining the truth or falsity of a hypothesis. He used deductive reasoning to solve the mysteries which were put in front of him. For example, he followed the blood trail in order to discover which window the monk actually jumped from, and followed a trail of footprints in the snow which he later matched with another monks shoes. His method was significantly different from that of the inquisitor's method in that he was willing to discover the truth before making accusations, and he was not overly ready to chalk up the mystery to the work of the devil or the antichrist. He also was willing to stand up for what he believed in and would see what he was doing through to the end.
