Episode 1
Ojibwemowin - "Ojibwe Oral Tradition"
"If we lose the language, we are no more, we may become something else, but we will not be Anishinabe."
-Walt Bressette, Red Cliff Ojibwe
Language defines the Anishinabe-Ojibwe people as a culture thriving in a unique relationship with the creator & the natural world. As the second largest tribe on the N. American continent, we have maintained a vast history through oral tradition for thousands of years, long before European contact. This episode of Waasa Inaabidaa - We Look In All Directions - examines the origin stories, language, and oral teachings of the Anishinabe-Ojibwe people of the Great Lakes Region.
Episode one of Waasa-Inaabidaa - We Look In All Directions - takes a powerful journey... from our origins to the decline and near disappearance of Ojibwe language and culture through rebirth and renewal, to today's renaissance. A mixture of animation, drama, artwork, archival photos, interviews & story telling, (some in Ojibwe with sub-titles) from Ojibwe scholars & elders presents the rich tapestry of Ojibwe creation & survival narratives, the migration stroy, & how Ojibwe language is being preserved & carried on through the children.
Reflecting the lessons of these stories, the Ojibwe people have adapted & survived generations of assaults on their culture, language & identity. Today, they are thriving through the renewal of language & traditions in all aspects of life.
