"I think that our government has done more than any other government for minorities." This is true. I can't let this comment slide by without anyone interuppting to say how awful other governments treat their minorities.
Let's start with women. In Afghanistan, women are treated worse than dogs. Only a few days of the week are they allowed to leave their homes. When they do leave, they must have a brother or their husband or father escort them throughout the town. The women are required to wear long loose, dresses over their bodies, and veils covering their faces (which is tradition Muslim dress, there's nothing wrong with that). Except, if their sleeves are a little too short, showing their wrists, or if their dress is too short and shows their ankles, they are allowed to be beaten! Not just by their husbands, but by anyone on the street who sees them! It wasn't always this way. Recently, a new government took over the country and changed the rules, to a more traditional Muslim society. Before this, women were able to go to school, hold regular jobs, they were doctors, teachers, etc. Now they are literally forced to stay home and knit. Oh the joy in being a woman.
How about in India and China, where girl babies are looked at as a regret, a mistake, an unfortunate accident? That boy babies are given the best food, clothes, attention, and then if there's any extra, they might give it to the girl baby. If they decide to let it live, that is. Pregnant women in India can go and get their child tested, to see if it's a boy or a girl. If it's a girl, many get an abortion. If they do carry the pregnancy full term, there's a handy bucket of water nearby, so that if the baby happens to be a girl, they can drown it asap and say it was stillborn.
What about Africa, where female circumcision is still widely practiced?
And the Kurds in Iraq, who would most likely be bombed if it weren't for the no-fly zones over where they live.
Um, Tibet?
Although our government does have it's problems, I think it's important to show how miserable other governments treat their citizens.
