A book I read just last year called "The Pillars of the Earth" written by Ken Follett is an excellent reading about the medieval era. It reveals the structure and systems of the church and how monasteries functioned. It also shows vividly how peasants and noblity interacted with the church and their dependence on each other. The novel may help some of you answer the question which Michael asks, "What makes these people think and act the way they do?" The book also focuses on the economics, politics and arts of the medieval era. One subplot of the novel is the consruction of a grand new cathedral built in the recently developed Gothic style. Another is a boys search for his heritage and yet another is the mystery behind the hanging which occurs at the beginning of the book.
Now beware to those of you who were offended or concerned with the sex scene in The Name of the Rose, because there is a bit of that in this book also. I think these "scenes" DO help us to understand the era, but in the case of this book might perhaps be added partly because, as another one of our clasemates puts it, "Sex sells!" Aside from this I think the book is very intriguing and intellectually stimulating. It is also a good history of the events in England during the medieval times.
If anyone else has read this book I'd like to hear your oppinion of it. Otherwise, if you'd like to get more of a taste for the medieval times, find some time to read this book!
