I don't think it is impossible to be a renaissance person today. I think we all are renaissance people and we just don't call ourselves that. Sure we might not be masters in all subjects or even masters of one subject, but we know 100 times what some of the Renaissance people knew. As a high school senior I learned calculus, studied all the great writers, learned to write at a fairly high level, excelled in the sports of the day, participated in a high level of music, participating in the student government, and in my free time enjoyed the arts of the day. I think that is way more then most of the Renaissance people ever tried to do in a year. Sure I didn't make any great masterpieces but I learned a ton about life and myself and I think that is what being a Renaissance person is all about.
