I don't think it is possible for anyone today to be a Renaissance person. Like you mentioned, there are far to many areas of study. In the age of the Renaissance, people had to do well at a little bit of everything, but there was not nearly as much knowledge as we have today. This, I feel, is why it is not stressed as much that people know everything. We have certainl liberal ed requirements in colleges which will give us a small idea of what things are about, but we don't have to get into detail about things like Super String Theory or some of the amazing things going on in the realms of science, math, or just about any other subject.
I know that I personally could never be a renaissance person. I don't have much artistic ability at all, my main creativity lies in writing. As far as math and science, I don't stand a chance! But then, in the age of the renaissance, only 5% (or something like that) of people were true renaissance people.
