I have been reading what has been said about "The scene" in the movie and not said anything, but now I feel that I must. What I have to say may shock some but keep in mind that I am a WOMAN...so here goes: I found NOTHING wrong with the scene involving Edgil and the young lady. No, I am not someone that watches this often, but I think all to often when we look at things such as these we see them through 20th century eyes and not the eyes of the time. It is easy to say,"It was put in for today's audience" or "It degrates women"...but those are thoughts of this decade. When looking back at history we often do not want to see the whole picture, but that is what the scene represented...the WHOLE picture of what life was like in that time.
Women have been using thier bodies to get those things that they have been denied since the dawn of time and that "use" of body is evident throughout history. Prostitution has been around since bible times, through the midevil period, into industrial Europe, rampant in Boom time America, and is STILL around today. We often see societies ills as coming from the power of technology such as TV and movies but in reality, the same things that we see as problems, our friends all throughout history have seen as well.
I am not saying that sometimes love scenes in movies and TV do not get out of hand. But we must remember that "The Name of The Rose" was used as a tool to show us what monastic and midevil life was like...ALL aspects of this life. Not just the ones that we see as being "politically correct."
