For what its worth, I don't think the sex scene was necessarily irrelevant to the
movie. It was, however, out of place and a bit unrealistic. For one, how come the girl was so fine? The entire mood and tone of the movie was dark and dank, with squirelly ugly monks and poor rotten people. All of sudden comes this dame, who after disrobing, is record hot. Why not make her kinda homely-not sexually undesirable- just a bit more in the feel of the movie.
Also, does Adso (Slater), have to be such a chump? Why would she just up and seduce him? Did she think that he represented her ticket outta her misery? I think the movie should have had Adso seducing her- granted he was training to be a monk- but humans are humans. The guilt and mind wrentching situations that followed because of Adso's love for this girl, would have been that much better.
