This project began a year ago because a fellow UMD student was understandably upset when someone made incorrect assumptions about her based on her ethnicity. Seeking an outlet for the student’s frustrations, the Office of Cultural Diversity created the UMD Stereotype Project.
Almost everyone can relate to being stereotyped
Categorizing things is a natural human tendency, but when characteristics are rigidly ascribed to an entire group of people, it creates a flawed vision of reality that is inaccurate and often hurtful.
We hope the UMD Stereotype Project will increase your awareness of stereotypes and encourage you to explore and learn more. Please be sure to Participate and frequently visit the Statements page that is updated daily with your contributions to the project. Check out our Resource page for more info.
Over 72 of people participated in the initial statement and photo project leading to our 19 unique posters. Visit the Exhibit page to find out where the posters will be displayed this semester and learn about upcoming events.
