Consumers spend between $4 and $6 billion annually on visits to massage therapists. "Because bodywork increases circulation, bringing more oxygen and nutrients to tissues, it may directly or indirectly affect every system of the body and promote health overall. According to the national Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork, massage has been shown to relieve muscle pain and stiffness, reduce blood pressure, improve flexibility, enhance athletic performance, strengthen the immune system and prevent disease. It also boosts energy levels and, by increasing endorphins, fosters emotional well-being. (Rubdown Lowdown, Derrick, Rachel C., March 2001). |
