- Mapping Inequality
["President Franklin D. Roosevelt created the Home Owner's Loan Corporation (HOLC) as part of the New Deal to provide loans that would enable citizens to buy homes. Between 1935 and 1945, the HOLC, in partnership with mortgage lenders, housing developers, and real estate appraisers, assessed and mapped the relative risk of providing home loans to individuals looking to purchase homes in different neighborhoods. Race played a central role in the HOLC's conception of the riskiness of a neighborhood; as a result, white homeowners were able to gain low-interest mortgages from the HOLC that black and Latino homeowners were largely denied. Scholars from the University of Richmond's Digital Scholarship Lab, the University of Maryland's College of Information Sciences ("iSchool"), and Virginia Tech, in collaboration with historian N.B.D. Connelly, have collaborated to digitize these maps alongside census information from 1930 and 1940. Visitors to this website can explore how different neighborhoods were "graded" by the HOLC and read area descriptions, authored by HOLC appraisers, for individual neighborhoods. Mapping Inequality currently includes 150 HOLC maps and over 5,000 descriptions. This project offers considerable insight into the history, sociology, and economics of American cities." "For readers with a connection to the Gopher State, the University of Minnesota offers this interactive map of historic aerial photography dating from the 1920s through the 2000s. In total, the map hosts over 100,000 photographs from the John R. Borchert Map Library. To explore this map, visitors can zoom in on any area of the state that is of interest. When they do, they will see each aerial photograph as a dot. Each dot is color-coded according to decade. Visitors may also filter results by decade via a panel on the left-hand side of the screen. Users may also search the map (for example, by zip code or the name of a city). Collectively, these images provide a glimpse into the history of Minnesota." - Map Stack -- [Map Stack allows educators, students, or anyone fascinated by maps to create exquisitely tailored cartographic images via a web-based click interface. The tool uses a system very close to the classic Photoshop platform of layers and palettes, allowing users to design their own maps without having to know any code, install software, or even do any typing. Layers are created using roads, labels, backgrounds, and even satellite imagery. In addition, the maps can be tweaked and fine-tuned with different colors, opacity, brightness, and other visuals. Best of all, the site makes sharing completed images via Pinterest and Tumblr quite easy. While learning the ins and outs of the site can take a little while, the results are more than worth it.
