"In the Korean and Japanese language, the Chinese character for the rice' ( ,kome?) is composed by two eights ( ,hachi?) and ten ( ,?) which is 88, eighty-eight (八十八 ,hachi-jū-hachi?). A proverbial saying in Japan states: "The farmer spends eighty-eight efforts on rice from planting to crop." This teaches the sense of mottainai and gratitude for the farmer and for rice itself."
