International Mathematician Scholar To Present 10 Seminar Lectures at UMD
UMD To Host North Central Mathematics Conference, August 9-13.


The UMD Department of Mathematics and Statistics is sponsoring the 1999 Mathematical Association of America North Central Section Summer Seminar, August 9-13.

Richard Askey of the University of Wisconsin Madison will present a set of ten expository lectures entitled "Counting and Calculus". There will also be a public lecture on the work of the great Indian mathematician, Srinivasa Ramanujan presented on August 12 at 7:30 p.m. in UMD Campus Center 120. Everyone is invited. The title of the lecture is "Ramanujan: Who was he? What Did He Do? And Why Do We Care?"

Dr. Richard Askey is the author of over 150 research papers, books and expository articles and has delivered more than 50 public invited lectures. He received his Ph.D. From Princeton University, and has held visiting positions at the University of Paris, University of Minnesota, University of Strasbourg, the Mathematical Institute in Budapest, and the Mathematical Center in Amsterdam. He was a Guggenheim Fellow, and is an Honorary Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was recently inducted into the National Academy of Sciences.
