ECE 1315 Software Tool

 

The software Altera MaxPlus II that came with your textbook is gradually phased out by Altera. Altera recommends it to be replaced with the software called Quartus II Web Edition. Therefore, we will use the Quartus II Web Edition instead of the MaxPlus II in our lab.

 

For downloading the software, please go to the Altera cite linked below:

If this link is broken, go to the Altera home page, www.altera.com. Look for University program and click on the link. From there, Design Software àQurtus II software for Education. Now you should be able to find the free software.

 

For downloading Qurtus, you will have to fill in some surveys. No free lunch there. When you are downloading the software, you should also request a license from the web. Then a license file will be emailed to you.

 

After downloading the software, please install it following the instruction given in the Altera website.

 

For activating the software, please get a license file for your computer from Altera. If you fill out the form provided in the Altera web site, they will send you the License file. Follow the following steps to setup the license file.

  1. Choose Settings > Control Panel from the Windows Start menu.
  2. Double-click the System icon in the Control Panel window.
  3. Click the Advanced tab in the System Properties dialog box.
  4. Click the Environment Variables button.
  5. Click the System Variable list to highlight it, and then click New.
  6. Type LM_LICENSE_FILE in the Variable box.
  7. Type <path to license file>\license.dat in the Value box.
      Example:
    C:\QUARTUS2WE\license.dat
  8. Click OK.

You can now run the Altera software.
