If you are a student who just registered for the first time at UMD, and are trying to do course work you will need to inititate your student email account and obtain an internet ID in order to use all other course pages.

This course offers students the opportunity to read and view some of the most important science fiction novels and films of the last five decades. The course uses the resources of the Internet to acquaint students with the views of a wide variety of people interested in science fiction. Such people take these stories seriously enough to talk with each other about what they show us about ourselves and our world. The course proceeds by examining five feature films and five novels looking for recurring themes, motifs and archetypes, seeking to understand the forces in post-industrial culture that drive artists to seek new mythologies capable of helping all of us respond to the incredible rate of change that we all live through and with.

The on-line course materials provide units of study built around each of the films and novels. Also included in the on-line materials are a course summary, the course syllabus, an explanation of how to do course work, quizzes, and assignments. In order to take quizzes and view instructor videos students must have the Apple Quicktime player installed on their computer.

Internet links will be available and use of the links to participate in ongoing newsgroup discussions of some of the works studied will be required.
