Now that it seems we have a hot debate going on the origins of the universe and the existance of god, I am providing the latest THEORIES on the origin of the universe and the nature of matter and how I believe there is a scientific justification for God. Please try to ride it out or at least read the end if its too much for you.
The Superstring Theory
Postulates that all matter and energy can be reduced to tiny strings of energy vibrating in a 10 dimensional universe. Clearly we don't live in 10 dimensions where are the other 6 spatial dimensions? Imagine taking a peice of paper which is two dimensional and rolling it up so it became a tube. Eventually the the tube would appear as a 1 dimensional line.
Superstring theory exists to unite the 4 fundamental forces which are
Gravity,Electro-magnetism,strong nuclear force,weak nuclear force.
Gravity keeps our feet on the ground, and electomagnetic force has to do with light and magnatism, the nuclear forces are involved in keeping atoms together.
Gravity is the only force which hasn't been united with the other three.
This theory is currently impossible to test, but it did predict some stuff about black holes, and the math works (which doesn't guarantee the existance of an object but everything that does exist has math that works.)
Which leads us to the current Big Bang Theory
The Inflationary Big Bang Theory
I'll just quote my source. for a while.
"One of the nagging problems of Einstein's old theory of gravity was that it did not explain the origin of the Big Bang. It did not
give us a clue as to what happened before the Big Bang.
The 10 dimensional superstring theory, however, gives us a compelling explanation of the origin of the Big Bang. According to
the superstring theory, the universe originally started as a perfect 10 dimensional universe with nothing in it.
However, this 10 dimensional universe was not stable. The original 10 dimensional space-time finally "cracked" into two pieces, a
four and a six dimensional universe. The universe made the "quantum leap" to another universe in which six of the 10
dimensions curled up into a tiny ball, allowing the remaining four dimensional universe to inflate at enormous rates.
The four dimensional universe (our world) expanded rapidly, eventually creating the Big Bang, while the six dimensional
universe wrapped itself into a ball and collapsed down to infinitesimal size.
This explains the origin of the Big Bang, which is now viewed as a rather minor aftershock of a more cataclysmic collapse: the
breaking of a 10 dimensional universe into a four and six dimensional universe.
In principle, it also explains why we cannot measure the six dimensional universe, because it has shrunk down to a size smaller
than an atom. Thus, no earth-bound experiment can measure the six dimensional universe. "
The major advantage this has over the old big bang theory (a super massive particle exploding) is...
1. The old theory predicted a certain type of particle should be all over the place it isn't, the new theory doesn't predict that.
2. It's a free lunch universe, any matter in existance can be formed from the energy from the expansion of space-time. The sum of matter and energy in the universe plus the negative potential energy equals ZERO. Meaning God or nothing didn't have to do much work.
God
Why does the universe such a nice place to live? I can tell you that if the values of certain universal constants were much different the universe would be entirely void. The speed of light value works very nicely and the 4 forces are not too strong and not too weak.
There is no known reason why things are as they are. But there are two options.
1.a It's a coincidence, had the universe been any different no one would be around to care.
1b. There are in infinte number of universes (bubbles of space-time) just about every combination occurs, some universes work others don't we are in one that works.
2 There is an intelligent being out there that set all the rules in place to make it a nice universe.
When we go this far back the athiests and not atheists are on equal footing with neither making more assumptions than the other.
Now my description of this God.
The god of this universe would not have to always be
checking in to fix the place. This type of god created a perfect universe (though not a perfect society) and its still perfect. Creationists on the other hand would state that the universe was once perfect but it all went to Hell after some apples got eaten.
In my opinion this is a minimal God that any advanced cvilization in the universe could discover (It also avoids the question raised by modern theologins, Did Jesus die for aliens too?)
Actually mainstream denominations that accept science have pretty much assimilated this notion of God expanding the Christian notion of God just as early christianity adopted Aristotles views of science. Occasionally it will pop in as a proof of a christian god but really all it establishes is the existance of A god not any specific god.
