Your definition is quite similer to mine. Defined in Webster's 9th Collegiate Dictionary, a Turner is one who forms articles with a lathe(a machine-tool for turning articles of wood, metal, etc.).

Turners made different kinds of furniure, tables, chairs, etc. They helped make tools, like for the garden. They also made wooden bowls, pots, polls, and anything that might have been of cylindrical shape. They were very skilled in their work and could make usable and yet decorative objects. Most of the idems they made could be traded. These crafts were useful to the monstary.

Turners are still around today. For example if you went down to Mexico you would be able to purchases decorative pots and bowls from turners eather on the street or in their shops.
