Alberti's On the Family focus' on the importance of education as it is needed to live a good life. He felt strongly about education and the mind. He felt that an educated mind was the key to becoming a great person. He believed that one who sits around, not exercising their minds dont want to be knowlegeable person in fact according to him they dont even deserve to live.
Alberti used a wonderful line to show his views on the importance of education. He said " They that the same thing happens to a mind as a bottle: if at first one puts bad wine in it, its taste will never disappear." I guess it is sort of a metaphore for good education. In that same time to be an idealistic Renaissance person, it is about being a eloquent person.
In the Renaissance time there was much to be learned. He wrote that "Riches are useful for gainning friends and praise, for with them we can help those in need." He felt that to have much riches was something to be admired.
Castiglioni was just the opposite of Alberti. From what it seems to me that Castiglioni has a list of things to fullfill to be a true Renaissance man. He believes that inorder to be good at everything , athletics, arts, also all the educational things such as science, and math. His requirements didnt just stop there. They went right down to how a person looked, their height, everything.
For me personally I perfer Alberti's view and ideas of how to be the perfect Renaissance man. He didnt have any specific requirements you had to fit into. All you had to do is work hard and have a desire to learn. I dont know even now too many people that would fit into Castiglioni's ideals of the perfect man.
