:I thought your post was really interesting to read. It is good to know that there are other people that think the same about this as my friends and I do. We have often talked about how much emphasis is put on the figure and size of women. It think that all people are truely beautiful, no matter what their size. What is the perfect figure for a woman? I don't think such a thing exists. As you go back through history the ideal of beauty changes with the times. Right now it is not fashionable to be bigger but the women of the Reniassance were revered for their curves and natural beauty. Size wasn't a big deal to the people of that time.
I think that the media has a great deal of influence on our ideas about beauty. There are very few women on television or in movies that aren't what is called the "perfect size" whatever that may be. The people that are a little bigger than the norm are often critized. Like your example of Kate Winslet. There are many bad things that have been said about her because she is just slightly bigger which is just cruel. I think there should be a wide variety of shapes and sizes portrayed on tv and movies. Afterall men aren't portrayed as having to be perfect. There are all different shapes and sizes on tv and movies. Why does ther have to be such an emphasis on perfection for women? If we could get rid of some of those streotypes that young girls are supposed to live up to I think we could help get rid of a lot of our societies problems--low self esteem and eating disorders for example.
