: I was surprised by the intense 'sinful' scene in the movie "The Name of the Rose". It brought attention to the shameful fact that back then men of the cloth could be corrupt and remain in the clergy. The young monk, Edgil, all too readily folds from the sexual taunts of the peasant girl. I see how the scene was essential in the movie, but I don't think that it had to be quite as graphic in order to get the point across. Also, as pointed out in Alissa's post, the dirty, unkempt peasant girl happened to have smooth shaven legs. I see these examples as the interference of the 20th century cinema's realization that sex sells. By putting a spin on the story of ancient monks, the film makers are simply keeping the modern-day viewers interested.
