: I would like you to post your required posting on Machiavelli's, Alberti's and Castiglione's views on what makes a Renaissance person as follow ups to this post.

All three men had different views on what would make someone a renaissance person but they all agreed that you don't want to allow yourself to be shamed. Alberti wrote that idleness will cause someone to be shamed and that is a very bad thing. He also talked about how idleness leads people to other vices as well. It seems like people today don't worry as much about being idle as they did back in the times of the renaissance, at least in the case of our own country, but back then, at least to Alberti it was a big deal and if you were practicing idleness you would not be able to be a renaissance person.

Castiglione wrote that for a person to be a renaissance person you must be practiced in the art of arms. He did not mention idleness as a negative but he did say that if you once got a reputation for not being skilled in arms you would never be able to escape that reputation. He also said you don't want to use tricks to fool people because that would also earn you a bad reputation. It seems as tough Castiglione only felt fighting and war was important and that everthing else didn't really matter.

And finally Machiavelli said to be a Renaissance person you could be many different types of rulers but you had to be a ruler, for Machiavelli all that seems to matter is having power and ruling over people. It didn't even matter if you were a cruel ruler, basically as long as you had power you to could be a renaissance person.

Today if someone was called a renaissance person they would probably be given that term because they can do many different trades, neither of the three men above really used that as a definition.

To end I want to apologize for the lateness of this post, I forgot. I still wanted to post though even if I don't get any points for it.
