Love should definitely be valued as high as fear, and I think that I was not the only one who read the Prince and wondered if Machiavelli was ever in love himself. You have to wonder. He refers to love as such an ordinary thing, like he wakes up in the morning, and says "What should I have for breakfast,.....what should I wear,......should I love her?" I guess that subconciously we might make a list of things we like and dislike about someone is our mind, but Machiavelli makes it sound like we have some kind of a choice, like it's a contest and whoever has the best pro to con ratio wins his love. I don't think he ever really fell for someone, or even has the ability to, or else he would not be so cut and dry about the most emotional thing humans can feel. Period. He may have good ideas about how to be a prince or how to maintain power, but Machiavelli should've talked to more people who've been in love before he made judgements on such a wonderful feeling.
