The ideal Renaissance person thought of by Alberti, Castiglioni, and Machiavelli all have similarities and differences.
Alberti, a man of many talents, believed in the ideals of hard work and a strong educational background as the basis to success. He also felt that if man was not idle or lazy then he could achieve almost anything from his hard work. His views of hard work and education influenced Castiglione and Machiavelli.
Castiglione, author of "The Courtier" was a diplomat from Italy. In "The Courtier" Castiglione gives instructions on how to govern wisely. Besides basic governing ideas he also introduced some new and controversial ones. Such as, educating women, and the stressing of manners over morals. Also like Alberti, Castiglione felt that anyone with an education and the will to succeed could.
Finally, Machiavelli was a diplomat and a statesman of Florentine. His book "The Prince" justified the need for a strong government free from the common morality of man. In doing so he gave ideas on how to be a good ruler. That it is better to be feared then loved. A ruler should be merciless in keeping other in line. As long as he didn't interfere with the basic livelihood of the citizens he ruled he could rule almost indefinitely. He did like the others believe in a strong educational background.
Each of these authors belonged to the middle class. During the Renaissance this middle class emerged with new ideas and beliefs. If was a mixing of old and new. These authors used their skills to express what they saw and felt in and about the world around them.
