One reason might be that Christmas wasn't originally a Christian holiday.
The only evidence in the bible that could point to when the Christ was born are the shephrds with their flocks. In the winters of the time there, the shepherds would not be out with their flocks at night. That only happened in the spring-fall seasons. The reason Christmas is when it is is because when the Christians decided to "convert" the Celtic peoples, they placed Christmas near the solstice, which was a religious day for the Celts. It's the same with the majority of the big Christian holidays, actually
