This was absolutely mandatory sex in this movie!!!!! How am I, A "20th century virtual reality boy" supposed to sit through 2+ hours of scary monks? Sex sells in this day in age just like it did back in the 1300's, only the tender has changed.
Really though- the sex was needed in the movie but I felt that it could have been done differently and still gotten the entire message across. We didn't need to see "all that" to illustrate the mischief of 14th century monks and curate.
I am dismayed by the dichotomy displayed between the characters, some of whom looked the part (i.e. hairy, scary, creepy and mean) and those like Edgil and Wm of Baskerville who clean and modern looking even in the garb. Then there is the penurious girl who is on the cutting edge of "feminity" with shaved legs and straight teeth.
