"I agree that love is not always a rational choice, but I do not understand how people can love those that treat them like shit."---That is what makes love irrational. They are loving someone who it is not in their interst to love. If they did not love them because they treated them like "shit," then he or she would be making a rational choice.

"I don't think people can truely love those who treat them so horrendously. I believe it is more like manipulation and deception." ---- The reason why manipulation and deception are so bad is that they are depriveing a person of their rational agency. A manipulated and decived peson no longer has the freedom to make a ratiuonal and moral descion. But.... if love is irrational,manipulation and deception does not apply.

If love is irrational, I still do not see how it less important than fear in maintaing of power. The control is still not in the hands of the citizens, (if a prince were to envoke love instead of fear), and is just as powerful.
