I agree with your statement that love should be valued just as highly as fear, and I do know that love can be used against or for a person just as fear can. In the book Prince it really does seem as though love should be forgotten, and only fear will run anything smoothly. Machiavelli says a land that is spread out between people the Prince/King trusts, and the people trust, the eaiser it is to take over than a land that lives in fear of just one leader.

You had mentioned people who are in abusive relationships, you said love is irrational, and "these people clearly love those who treat them poorly...they have NO choice in the matter." I do have to disagree with this statement, but if I did not understand you please let me know. I think the relationship may start out in love, but a lot of women stay in a relationship that is abusive because they begin to fear the man whom is abusive. Yes, love is irrational, but in some cases that love is used against them and then it begins to turn into fear. There is a thin line, and I don't know if Machiavelli sees that. Maybe he does. I do think that he puts loyalty above love, but maybe that is the best way to run a state, if it is, I would do a lousy job.

As usual, it probably doesn't make too much sense, but I hope I didn't confuse anyone.
