Kind of silly question, but rather than allow it to eat you (and possibly your teeth) up, I'll give you my thoughs.
Last quarter in my history class (Dawn of Modern Europe) It discussed the diets of many ancient people. You must remember that they do not have anything like we have these days. These people were lucky if they could afford food, much less have the luxuries we have, such as a tooth brush and paste. We take these things for granted, but they didn't have those sorts of things.
As far as their diets, it surely didn't help much. The diets of the rich consisted of largely sweets, meats, and wines. Their health was terrible. The in many instances, had worse diets than the poor, who ate grains and vegetables and lots of potatos. The high sugar diets made their teeth rot away, and many time the teeth fell out all together.
So, that is my take on the horrible teeth situation. If you want to test my theory, try not brushing your teeth for a couple of years and eat lots of candy. You will probably learn that it is not just the British who had these problems :)
