Job Description:
Research and design costumes for a production. Pull costumes and complete all paperwork according to schedule. Source and purchase costumes as needed within the budget. Complete some finishing construction or craft work on the costumes. Attend all production meetings and dress rehearsals. Train dressers how to perform quick changes.
Student will be given a set of due dates which you must adhere to. Each item is due to Caitlin on a Monday and presented at the production meeting on Tuesday. It is essential that the assistant designer adheres to these dates.
Planning Period:
Read the script
Create a costume plot
Attend AND contribute to all production meetings
Meet weekly with Caitlin and the assistant designer. Schedule more frequent meetings with the director as needed.
Schedule daily hours/check-in times with Laura in the costume shop
Create preliminary research and final research presentations
Pre-Production Period:
Create and revise rough sketches according to director/mentor feedback.
Create final renderings according to director/mentor feedback.
Create a piece list based off of the final renderings.
Attend and contribute to draper meeting
Assist with pulling costumes
Create source list
Find fabric swatches for builds
Fitting / Build Period:
Prep all fittings before the actor arrives
Attend all fittings and make decisions about construction and fit.
Maintain budget while purchasing items
The costume designer is responsible for most of the pulling of costumes, accessories, and materials for builds. The costume designer is expected to help with finishing of the costumes (dye, craftwork, embellishments, etc).
Dress Rehearsals/Performances:
Costume Designer must attend all dress rehearsals and any Quick Change rehearsals scheduled during tech week.
The costume designers will take notes on the costumes during the run, discuss the notes with the faulty mentor and present any relevant notes during the tech table. The designer is expected to email those notes to the costume shop manager and the design mentor at the end of every dress rehearsal.
The costume designer must address any design notes that come up during performances
Strike and Post-Production:
Attend strike and help with laundry and organization
Grading:
Final grade will be determined by the Faculty Supervisor after consulting necessary production team members with regards to how well the duties listed above were executed. If areas for improvement are noted, you will receive a written explanation with what was observed and suggestions for improvement.
