TH 1551
Sound for the Theatre

Final Project
Environmental Soundscape

I. Purpose: To recreate an environmental soundscape and execute the design for the class.

II. Procedure for selecting soundscape:

1. Choose one of the possible soundscapes at random. Students may trade assignments with others in the class, or choose another available soundscape. If a student would rather create their own soundscape, it must be approved in advance by the instructor.

2. Once a soundscape is determined, the student must create a ten minute scenario for playback in an octophonic environment. The soundscape must have some type of basic storyline with a defining moment within the ten minute event. Scenarios must be written up and handed in by the appointed deadline.

III. Procedure creating the soundscape:

1. Each student must identify all sounds to be included in the soundscape and identify how those sounds are to be played back for the class. A sound plot must be created and submitted detailing the passage of time and which sounds will be played back on which input devices. For an example of a Sound Plot, go to <th1551soundplot.html>

Sound Plots are due at the beginning of class Wednesday, April 26.

2. Students may use CD, minidisc, or SFX digital software for the project. The project requires a minimum of eight input channels. If needed, additional playback appliances may be employed by pin-patching them into the mixing console.

3. A speaker configuration diagram must be developed using a 1/8" scale ground plan of the Marshall Center and submitted detailing placements and output assignments. Projects must take full advantage of the octophonic sound system. For an example of a speaker assignment diagram, go to <th1551blockdiagram.html>

Speaker Configurations are due at the beginning of class Wednesday, April 26.

III. Results:

1. During Finals Week each student will execute their soundscape for the class.

V. To be handed in:

1. All recorded media, properly labeled, including CDs and minidiscs.
2. If SFX is used, a file labeled YournameSoundscape must be in your folder on the computer desktop.
3. Sound plot showing what cues will be played at what times during playback.
3. Block diagram indicating inputs, and amplifier to speaker patch.
4. Scale drawing of Marshall Center indicatrinig speaker placement.
