Power Amplifiers
Power amplifiers transform line level electrical signal into
larger wattages of electrical signal in order to make loudspeakers
respond.
Inputs:
- Line level: unbalance 40K ohm(phono or RCA) if near mixer.
- Mike level: preamp required to bring signal to line level.
Outputs: Choice of 4, 8, or 16 ohms
Power Rating:
- RMS: (root mean squared) power handling ability for
any reasonable frequency range at unvarying volume.
- Peak: maximum burst of power the amplifeir is capable
of handling above RMS.
- Total Harmonic Distortion: measured as a percentage
of power level (.01-.25 %)
Combination mixers/amplifiers:
- Smaller systems
- Convenient for travel
Typical theatre amplifier:
- Rack mounted stereo amps
- Low distortion
- Flat frequency response
- 1-6 watts per seat
- silent switching patchable load
- 12 gauge output cable (no more than 1 dB signal drop)
Speaker hook-up:
- Series: Two 8 ohm speakers = 16 ohm load
- Parallel: Two 8 ohm speakers = 4 ohm load
