Student Learning Outcomes

1. To articulate how theatre embodies culture and it's values.
2. To develop critcal thinking skills by effectively evaluating theatre productions.
3. To effectvely analyze structure, plot, characterization and design of theatre productions.
4. To identify and describe major theatre genres from different historical periods.

Class Attendance

Role will be taken each day the class meets. Each absence beyond three will result in the loss of five points per absence. Students are expected to arrive for class on time. Being late to class will count as an absence.

The use of laptop computers and hand held electronic devices is prohibited during class time unless otherwise instructed. Students found texting during class will be asked to leave the classroom.

On Line Discussions: Students are required to read the textbook and contribute to on-line discussions. For Canvas log on directions, go to <https://canvas.umn.edu/>

Each student will attend five plays during the semester. Attendance at the following theatre productions is required:

Critical Review Blogs

Promote a show worth seeing, or pan a production others should avoid! Go to UMD Theatre Review Blog and post your review. All reviews are required to have a minumum of 2,000 characters and a maximum of 4,000 characters. Reviews less than 2,000 characters will not be graded. A minimum of five reviews is required for the course.


Extra Credit

Students may choose to see more than five plays during the semester. Blog entries for up to two additional productions will be accepted.


Evaluation

Grade will be determined as follows:

Midterm Objective Exam 75 pts.
Final Objective Exam

75 pts.

On-line Discussion (13) 65 pts.
Blog Entries (5) 50 pts.
Total 265 pts.
   
Extra Credit - Plays reviewed beyond the five required for the course. 20 pts.
