Punk emerged in the mid-70’s and has been around since then. Following the 70’s, several of the punk subgenres have become popular. The new millennium found commercial success for pop punk.

Description:

Punk is a genre of rock music that was often anti-establishment, with highly political or nihilistic lyrics. It can be identified as short, fast, and hard music with stripped down instrumentation. Punk music began in a DIY Washington DC and spawned an entire subculture.

Roots:

Punk rock emerged out of rock and roll, rockabilly, garage rock, psychedelic rock, and glam rock. It was the political answer to rock music.
