Indie rock is a genre of rock that represents artists that are unsigned or signed to an independent record label. It is often synonymous with underground music and alternative rock. Indie artists focus on having complete control over their music and careers and generally gain popularity through college radio, independent radio, and WOM communications.
Roots:
Indie music and subculture is highly DIY. It morphed out of hardcore punk, punk, post-punk, and alternative music. It was the development of a scene for the underground bands, those who were still representing themselves rather than a mainstream label.
