Ben had a tough time with all those steps in Vernazza after he'd gotten stitches in his knee. Vernazza has a city ordinance restricting the colors residents can use to paint their homes. As we were hiking out of town, an American college student volunteered to take a family photo. Ann took a photo from the same point of view, but included Vernazza's beautiful skyline. The further we hiked southward down the trail, the more breathtaking the view became.

The sea was quite peaceful during our entire stay, but we saw postcards with photos of waves crashing completely over this outcropping. We became quite intrigued by how all the buildings along the city streets were interconnected. We saw many icons built into the walls of various homes Various paints were also incorporated into the exterior of homes, too. Streets no wider than sidewalks in the U.S. were often very steep. This door was either level with the sidewalk or one step down depending on which side of the door you were looking at.

We were amazed by the maze-like streets that wandered up the hills to either side of the main street in Vernazza. Someone's front door could have been literally an arm's length away from a neighbor's window. Another street leading to an icon on the exterior of a home in Vernazza. To move heavy objects up and down these narrow streets, gas-powered wagons with half-tracks came in quite handy.
