On-Campus Dorms

There are both good and bad things about living on the UMD campus in the dorm rooms. Most freshmen find, however, that the good weighs out the bad.

Pros:
It’s relatively close to all your classes
You never have to go outside into the freezing cold weather because the dorms are connected to every other building on campus except the apartments.
Furniture is provided for you. That means not spending a bunch of extra money.
Access to the food plans for the Dining Center, which is only available to on-campus students.

Cons:
You might have a roommate you don’t like or that doesn’t like you.
Because you’re in a single room, you don’t really get your own space.
Neighbors may be loud by playing loud music or running around or people may cause noise..
There isn’t wireless Internet in the dorms.

There are a variety of different activities that are at UMD. There are sororities and fraternities, history clubs, science clubs, and basically anything you want. If they don’t have a club or activity that you like, you can always start up a new group.  I would recommend that students get involved in student activities because they get you involved on campus and are a good way to form a group of friends that are interested in the same things as you are. Also doing an activity forces you to get out of your dorm and not just do homework and go to classes. There are many pros and cons to joining student activities, most of them being pros. The pros of student activities are that you meet new people, you get involved in the school, it can look good on your resume, you could be considered a well-rounded student, and you are also considered to be active. A con of student activities is that we are already paying a lot of money for student tuition, so the cost for these activities to cause a problem. Other cons are that it could require too much work, could cause a lot of stress, of simply the activities could just be boring.
