In this assignment, you will repurpose a paper, essay, or other academic piece that you've written which advances an argument or elaborates a complex idea. You will translate this argument or elaboration into three different document formats that could be used in its face-to-face presentation:
- a "high resolution" poster laying out the argument or idea of the paper by combining visual and verbal discoures,
- a handout meant to accompany an oral presentation of the paper, and
- a Tuftesque PowerPoint Presentation that would supplement an oral presentation.
The poster will be based on the "poster presentation," an increasingly common means of presenting research and writing at professional conferences
The handout will be based on Tufte's recommendation in The Cognitive Style of PowerPoint, and would be intended to accompany the oral presentation of the paper in a professional, academic meeting.
The PowerPoint document will be an experiment in using PowerPoint in the supplementary Tufte advises, and will include the text of the talk pasted into PowerPoint's "Notes" window. You will also practice what we'll discuss as a "dialogical" approach to the oral/visual presentation of ideas.
