1. Topic. Confection develops a genuinely rich, complex and useful concept, creating a sense of analytical depth. Topic seems worth the time and effort to produce the confection. A telling analysis is achieved through the visual medium. |

2. Parts and Relationships. Confection develops its analysis by visually defining the topic’s parts and indicating their relationships. Each part is elaborated (visually) as a dynamic or set of ideas/relationships in itself, rather than being presented simply with a single symbol, label, or icon. Each part is complex and suggestive in how it’s presented. The design and representation of the parts conceptually suggest the relationship among the parts, and thus visually integrate them. |

3. Background and Layout. The background or structuring theme is thoughtfully and creatively chosen to suggest the dynamic relationship of the concept’s parts, and the tone of that relationship. Choice among the three possible schemes of “imagined scene,” “compartments,” or “hybrid” seems conscious and considered. Overall, the confection invites the eye to “think” through the parts and to see them as visual components of the overall topic. |

4. Commentary. Completeness, thoughtfulness, substance. Suggests a thorough understanding of Tufte’s idea of the confection. |
