#15. Cazenovia Wheat (Corn) Field.

34 x 58, oil on canvas, restored in 1980. "Gilbert Munger" lower left. After returning to America from Europe, Munger painted in this area of upper New York State with his artist friend Dwight Williams of Cazenovia in the fall of 1900, thus dating the picture to 1900-1902. The picture actually appears to depict a corn field. See the discussion of this point in the entry for painting #160, another version of the same scene. An "EH Friedrichs ... 140 Sullivan St., New York" stamp on the back dates the canvas in the 1890s. Gifted in 1960 by Miss Melville Silvey, a Munger relative, to the Tweed Museum of Art, Univ. of Minnesota Duluth. IAP 25680073. Tweed 2003 Exhibition n.65. QFD Pl.68. See American Painting at the Tweed Museum of Art by J. Gray Sweeney, 1982, p.19. Image from Sweeney book plate.
