International Expert Will Perform Indian Classical Dance

A performance of the Indian Classical Dance Bharatanatyam will be held at the University of Minnesota Duluth at 7 pm on June 23, 2011 in the Kirby Ballroom. The event is free, suitable for all ages and refreshments will be provided.

Saroja Vaidyanathan, an internationally known expert of this dance form, will demonstrate different expressions and movements of the dance, which has a two-thousand-year-old tradition.

Nandini Bhowmick, a doctoral student at the department of education said Vaidyanathan generates awareness for various social issues through her dance. "Her entire performance is set to the theme of empowerment of women," said Bhowmick.

The dance is often referred to as the national dance of India and is accompanied by the classical Carnatic music. It is a popular Indian dance with its origin in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
