Equity and Diversity Award Honors UMD
The University of Minnesota system presented UMD with the 2011 Equity and Diversity Outstanding Unit Award, recognizing UMD's commitment to and accomplishments toward integrating equity and diversity into the campus culture. The award was accepted by UMD's Chancellor Lendley C. Black at an event held on November 16 at the U of M Twin Cities campus.
At the same event, students were presented 2011 Scholarly Excellence in Equity and Diversity Awards for their accomplishments. There were 13 high-achieving students from diverse backgrounds selected from across the U of M system that is comprised of Duluth, the Twin Cities, Rochester, Morris, and Crookston.
"It is an honor to be recognized for what we have accomplished to create a positive and inclusive climate for everyone. It also is a reminder that like other communities across the country, there is more work to do," said Chancellor Black. "I'm especially proud of our students who were recognized for their excellent work and contributions."
UMD was selected to receive the Outstanding Unit Award because the campus demonstrates exemplary leadership that is collaborative, sustainable, and linked to the campus's mission and vision, according to the Office for Equity and Diversity, University of Minnesota Twin Cities.
"During the past year," said Kris Lockhart, associate vice president of the Office for Equity and Diversity. "UMD distinguished itself by demonstrating visionary and insightful leadership to confront and resolve inequities through strategic decision-making, allocation of resources, and establishment of priorities. We're thrilled to honor UMD, as the campus continues to take great strides in institutionalizing equity and diversity as core values in all it does."
