Note: This notice went out to all UMD students this fall.
UMD is concerned about the safety and well-being of all students and wants to ensure an environment that promotes student learning and success. With this in mind, effective fall semester 2009, UMD will be addressing both on- and off-campus violations.
The UMD Office of Student and Community Standards will receive information from local law enforcement that will enable us to track student violations (tickets, citations) whether the incident occurs on or off campus. Focused attention will be given to violations involving alcohol.
For several years UMD police have contacted the parents of students who are transported to detox or a hospital as a result of alcohol-related health concerns. We will continue this practice.
In addition, we may notify the parents of any UMD student under the age of 21 who receives a second or subsequent alcohol citation, or if there is concern for the student's well-being. This applies to both on- and off-campus violations. The intent of this practice is to ensure parents and guardians are part of the discussion when an underage student has engaged in a pattern of behavior regarding alcohol that potentially places the health and safety of that student or others at risk.
