Over $62,000 in scholarships and awards were presented September 17 at the annual University of Minnesota Duluth Engineering/ Industry Banquet. Fifty -five scholarship checks were awarded to students in Industrial Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Chemical Engineering. Scholarship funds are contributed each year by business and individuals. A committee comprised of industry and UMD represntatives help raise the funds.
The annual UMD College of Science and Engineering Recognition Award was presented to Bonnie Fena of Reptron Hibbing Manufacturing. The award is given each year for the "outstanding contributions that bring excellence and distinction to the engineering programs at UMD".
UMD presented three industry awards. The awards are given for "substantial contributions and ongoing support of the engineering programs at UMD." The three companies honored were: Enbridge Energy Company, Inc. (Formerly Lakehead Pipeline), Duluth; General Diesel and Electronics, Hibbing; and Krech Ojard and Associates of Duluth.
Dr. James P. Riehl, dean of the College of Science and Engineering, said, "The level of support from business and industry for our engineering students is tremendous. These scholarships set an example of the strong interest and support that is found in our region."
Keynote speaker for the event was Penn Seigal, Chairman and CEO of Potlatch Corporation of Spokane, Washington.
