  Physician AssistantEducation

The profession began in the 1960's. The first physician assistants were Navy Corpsmen returning from the Vietnam War. Today there are approximately 38,000 practicing physician assistants. PA's are trained in 120 programs located at major universities and colleges, 44 of these programs are at the graduate level. PA education requires about 1,300 hours of academics in the first year of training (as compared to 1,800 hours over 4 years for a bachelors degree). This is followed by about 3,000 hours of clinical education in the remaining portion of the program. Medical experience which is useful is not required by every program. Most students enter all PA educational programs with at least a Bachelor's degree (83%).
