In summary, Minnesota
has made great strides toward providing quality health care for all residents
regardless of culture. There is still a long way to go, but at least there
is a place from where to begin. If each health care provider is aware
of the cultures he or she will see in their practice and takes steps to
learn about each culture, the provider will be better prepared to care
for their patients. The provider will be able to communicate better with
the varying cultures, have the ability to incorporate folk medicine into
the health care plan when appropriate, and understand underlying aspects
of the culture that may not be prevalent at each patient encounter. Overall,
the health care team will function to the best of its ability when all
members are educated in basic communication skills, team roles and cultural
diversity. Involving current community members from varying cultures is
one way to use resources within the community while providing a non-threatening
way for cultures within the community to voice their needs and wants from
health care. Education is one of the best ways to dispel myths and misconceptions
and create an environment of health and wellness.
