Decreasing Communication Barriers

Basic concepts of communication of the patient encounter include:

  • The introduction of one's self with some sort of greeting when entering the room
  • Seating one's self at a reasonable distance from the patient to allow for personal space but create an intimate encounter at the same time
  • Speaking in terms that that patient will understand
  • Asking open, non-judgmental questions
  • Asking one question at a time
  • Listening and remaining quiet until the patient has had a full opportunity to answer a question
  • Open and comfortable body language during the encounter with the patient
  • Explanation to the patient of the parts of the physical exam
  • Proper explanation of the findings of the physical exam
  • Explanation of the treatment plan as well as allowing the patient to ask questions

When these steps are followed, most patient encounters will be a positive encounter for the patient and the provider.
