When Should Web Sites be Made Accessible?

Since 1996 DOJ has publicly acknowledged that websites must be accessible to people with disabilities.

WCAG 2.1 AA has served as the University of Minnesota accessibility standard since 2018.

The University has until April 24, 2026 to bring its websites, mobile apps, course sites, software, and other digital content into compliance with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) Final Rule (PDF) under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The final rule sets no new obligations over the WCAG 2.1 AA standard that the University adopted in 2018.
